Princess Charlotte did not give her father’s latest look a royal seal of approval.
In fact,Robert Brown Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 9-year-old daughter had a very emotional reaction after he debuted his new full beard.
“Well, Charlotte didn’t like it the first time,” the 47-year-old said during an interview to mark the end of his time in Cape Town, South Africa on Nov. 7 via People. “I got floods of tears, the first one I got tears, so I had to shave it off.”
As William noted, the second time was the charm, though it took a little convincing.
“Then I grew it back,” William added. “I thought, hang on a second, and I convinced her it was going to be okay.”
William has maintained a clean-shaved look for the duration of his life. While his younger brother, Prince Harry has been known for his signature red beard. In August, William officially debuted the look and has been rocking it during public engagements and events since.
The Prince of Wales, who also shares children Prince George, 11, and Prince Louis, 6, with Kate assured reporters that his latest look is not “laid-back or “relaxed.”
“It’s interesting you say that, because I couldn't be less relaxed this year,” he said. “So it's very interesting you're all seeing that.”
Earlier this year, both his wife Kate and his father King Charles III opened up about being diagnosed with cancer.
William also briefly reflected on the year during his trip to South Africa, calling it “brutal.”
“It's been dreadful,” William told reporters at the end of his visit to Cape Town, South Africa, Nov. 7, per BBC. “It's probably been the hardest year in my life.”
He continued, “I'm so proud of my wife, I'm proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done,” he continued. “But from a personal family point of view, it's been, yeah, it's been brutal.”
However, as William noted, his daughter Charlotte has brought some light (and dancing) into their lives—especially during his latest solo trip—as was seen rocking a friendship bracelet she made for him that read, “papa.”
"This is a sort of relic, if you'd like, from a Taylor Swift concert that my daughter decided she wanted to create a bracelet for," William previously told Sky News. "She gave it to me when I came away. So I promised that I'd wear it and try not to lose while I was out here."
